Nürburgring hosts the season opener of the Euroformula Open with twenty-five cars on the starting grid and becoming, again, one of the most successful championships in the world
The Euroformula Open officially starts its 2014 campaign next weekend at Nürburgring, the season opener of the calendar including eight meetings throughout the season. The Euroformula Open introduces new features such as new engine upgrades, raising the horsepower figure to a maximum of 240hp. This has brought quicker lap times and the Euroformula Open cars have beaten in the Winter Series previous lap records set in previous seasons.
The entry list is really strong. Therefore, up to twenty-five cars have been entered for the season opener on German soil at the spectacular Nürburgring race track. The German venue made its debut in the series two years ago and from then on it has seen exciting races with close fights for wins. On its debut both races were won by Sam Dejonghe (Team West-Tec) and Gianmarco Raimondo (RP Motorpsort) – who grabbed both pole positions-, and then in Copa Jordan Perroy (Top F3) and Kevin Giovesi (DAV Racing) achieved one win each. Then, in 2013, Ed Jones (Team West-Tec) – champion at the end of the season- and Hector Hurst (Emilio de Villota Motorsport) claimed two resounding victories over the weekend. Richard Gonda (Drivex) and Tommaso Menchini (Corbetta Competizioni) finished on top of the podium in Copa that year.
RP Motorsport, last year´s champion in team´s classification, will put on track four Dallaras F312. Sandy Stuvik, confirmed last Saturday, Artur Janosz, Andrés Saravia and John Simonyan will drive its four cars. Team West-Tec, entering no less than five cars, have confirmed Yarin Stern, Cameron Twynham, Nicolas Pohler, Tanart Sathienthirakul and Wei Fung Thong for this round with five Dallaras F312.
Emilio de Villota Motorsport and Campos Racing, two Spanish outfits founded by former Formula 1 drivers, are back with four and three cars respectively. Igor Urien, Yu Kanamaru, Che-One Lim and a fourth driver to be confirmed have joined Emilio de Villota Motorsport for 2014. Meanwhile Alex Palou, Sean Walkinshaw and Konstantin Tereschenko will race under the Campos Racing banner. DAV Racing have confirmed Tommaso Menchini and Henrique Baptista for Germany with the driver of its third car to be announced before long. Damiano Fioravanti and William Barbosa will drive two Dallaras F312 of Corbetta Competizioni, and BVM Racing, another transalpine team, entering at least another car.
Among Copa contenders Drivex, after clinching the title with its Dallara F308 driven by Richard Gonda last year, is back to compete against the RP Motorsport vehicles driven by Saud Al Faisal and Constantino Peroni.
The Euroformula Open and the International GT Open will be joined at Nürburgring by the new SEAT León Eurocup, the Radical European Masters and the AvD Historic Cup.
